Ultrasonic Piezoelectric Drives - UPD

The Ultrasonic Piezo Drive, or UPD, consists of a ring that provides two opposite contact zones. The UPD makes it possible to generate various types of vibration displacements at those contact zones: elliptical, normal, tangential, or oblique. The UPD is excited, via two electrical ports, with sine signals in the most general case. A phase angle may be applied between these signals. The vibration trajectory is then either controlled by the frequency or by the phase angle between the electric signals. The basic application of the UPD consists of generating motion of a body pressed against one of the contact zones. The motion is obtained according ultrasonic driving principles involving tribological phenomena. Other applications of the UPD are found in ultrasonic transducers, such as welding transducers, for instance. UPDs can be arranged in various to construct a large variety of ultrasonic piezoelectric motors. The UPD is extremely versatile and can be applied to linear motion as well as rotating motion.
